Capture cards confirmed for real consoles and handhelds

Capture cards take a console or handheld's HDMI output as their input, which is why they're structurally open to PS5 and Xbox Series the same way monitors are. 173 confirmed: 49 for PS5, 31 for Xbox Series, 153 for notebooks, and a smaller handheld slice (33 Steam Deck, 15 ROG Ally, 10 Legion Go) for people capturing handheld gameplay through an external dock.

HDCP is the single most repeated fix across this category. The Genki ShadowCast 2 Pro needs HDCP manually disabled in the PS5's system settings before it processes any signal at all — a console-side setting, not a card defect, and a check worth doing first on any black-screen report.

The Elgato HD60 X has a documented EDID handshake bug that causes complete audio silence over HDMI specifically on Steam Deck — SteamOS reads the card's default EDID as reporting no speakers. The fix runs on a separate Windows PC: Elgato's own 4K Capture Utility has to force the right EDID profile onto the card before it behaves correctly on the Deck.

Platform matters as much as the card itself for some models. The AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1 (GC553G2) is capped at 4K60 capture on macOS regardless of hardware — its full 4K144 capture rate is Windows-only, and it needs day-one firmware updates (v1.0.5.5+) just to unlock ultrawide 3440×1440 support.
